Barthelemy Chantal Andrea(France)
Memory and Dream / 2014 / acrylic and silver leaves on canvas / 140cm×100cm
Appreciation:The theme of the 6th Beijing Biennale is “Memory and Dream”. The French female artist Barthelemy Chantal Andrea centered on the theme and created this acrylic painting Memory and Dream. But she doesn’t deliberately cater to the theme but bring herromantic imagination into full play and convey her authentic feelings. The woman profile in the painting is like a self-portrait of the artist. She appears serene and deep in thought in an empty room with only a chandelier. The two female figures at the back are thought to be conceived by the artist (they may both represent the artist), wandering like a sleep-walker: one is watching from the doorway in the direction of old castle in her memory while the other is walking towards the ocean in her dream through the bridge outside the window. The symbolic figures, the spatial illusion and the mysterious fantasy world can be taken as the “Classical Surrealism” with a Belgian artist Delvaux as one of its representatives, but Barthelemy Chantal Andrea replaces the images of desire and death with tranquil and peaceful mentality.
Barthelemy Chantal Andrea was born in France in 1958 and graduated from Aix en Province University-France and the Art Academy of Hangzhou. Now she is artist and teacher. She has participated in the 3rd, 4th and 5th Beijing Biennale, the Santorini Biennale 2014 and so on.
