Beijing, a City that Hosts Both Summer and Winter Olympic Games
In 2008, China, an oriental civilization with a time-honored history, embraced the Olympic Games and held a successful sports competition. In 2015, Beijing, together with Zhangjiakou, won the Winter Olympics bid; therefore, Beijing will once again join hands with the Olympics, making it the first ever city in the world that hosts both Summer and Winter Olympic Games. By then, it will certainly become a focal point of the world.
The Chinese delegation celebrated after Beijing and Zhangjiakou won the Winter Olympics bid at the 128th plenary session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 31, 2015.
Beijing, capital of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), is a national hub of politics, culture, international exchange and science and technology. With coordinates of 39°54’ N 116°23’, Beijing is located in Northern China and is mostly surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin to the southeast.
Beijing boasts a time-honored history. The earliest traces of human habitation in this city were found in the village of Zhoukoudian, where Peking Man lived. In 1045 B.C., Beijing became the capital city of the State of Ji, which was later conquered by the State of Yan that also made Beijing its capital. From 938, Beijing served as the capital of the Khitan Liao Dynasty, Jurchen Jin Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Since October 1st, 1949, it has become the capital of the PRC.

Today, Beijing is not only a famous capital city with many heritages, but a modern global city with great vitality. Along its Central Axis that stretches from the south to the north of the city, there are such tourist attractions as Zhengyang Gate, Tian’anmen Gate, the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, Beihai, Drum Tower and Bell Tower; there are also modern buildings, including the Great Hall of the People, National Center for the Performing Arts, the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube. Zhangjiakou, one of the host cities of the 2022 Winter Olympics (the other Beijing), is located at northwest of Hebei Province. It is a central city of the northwestern Hebei Province and connects Beijing and Tianjin, as well as Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. This city is equipped with perfect natural conditions and facilities for hosting snow and ice sports competitions, including long snowfall period, high-quality and abundant snow, appropriate temperature and wind speed, excellent terrain, closeness to Beijing and convenient transportation.
