Symposium Overview of the 8th Beijing Biennale

        以“构建人类命运共同体背景下的国际当代造型艺术担当”为主题的第八届中国北京国际美术双年展国际学术研讨会于8月31日在北京前门建国饭店隆重举行。中国美术家协会分党组副书记、北京双年展策委、召集人陶勤出席研讨会并致辞,中央美术学院教授、北京双年展顾问邵大箴担任总主持人,北京双年展四位策划委员,即中国艺术研究院研究员王镛、《美术》杂志社长兼主编尚辉、清华大学美术学院教授包林、邹文担任分场主持人。

The 8th Beijing International Art Biennale International Symposium, themed as "the Responsibility of International Contemporary Plastic Art in the Context of Building a Community of Shared Future for Mankind", was held at Qianmen Jianguo Hotel on August 31 in Beijing. Tao Qin, the Deputy Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of China Artists Assosiation as well as the convener of the Beijing Biennale Organizing Committee, attended the symposium and delivered a speech. Shao Dazhun, professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and consultant of the Beijing Biennale, served as the chief chair. Four members of the Beijing Biennale Organizing Committee, namely Wang Yong, researcher of the China Academy of Fine Arts; Shang Hui, president and editor-in-chief of Art magazine; Bao Lin, professor of the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University; and Zou Wen, served as the sub-hosts.

        会议邀请了韩国美协主席李范宪,原法国美协主席雷米•艾戎,俄罗斯艺术学院院士、列宾美院教授布里奥克,美国费城艺术大学校长大卫·雅格,中国国家画院艺术委员会副主任、北京双年展策委张晓凌,大型主题绘画作者、中央美院副教授廖勤,以及白俄罗斯、新西兰、韩国上合组织国家从西班牙到南美洲美国特展代表共20余位艺术家和理论家围绕主题进行发言。

 

The symposium invited Lee Bumhun, chairman of the Korean Fine Artists Association; Rémy Aron, former chairman of the French Artists Association; Bliok, academician of Russian Academy of Art and professor of Repin Academy of Fine Arts; David Yager, president of the University of Arts, Philadelphia in the United States; Zhang Xiaoling, deputy director of the Art Council of China National Academy of Painting and curator of the Beijing Biennale; Liao Qin, creator of large-scale theme paintings and associate professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts; and more than 20 artists and theorists from Belarus, New Zealand, South Korea, SCO countries, Spain and South America as well as the United States to speak on the theme. 

    来宾们各抒己见,就当代艺术创作与构建人类命运共同体理念的理论关联、中外现当代美术创作史论研究、本届双年展主题含义阐释、展出作品整体或局部观感等相关问题进行了广泛的交流和深入探讨,对北京双年展也给予了高度评价和中肯建议。来自世界各国的艺术家代表、艺术机构、媒体200余人出席了研讨会。总主持邵大箴首先介绍道,自2015年习近平主席在纽约联合国总部演讲时提出“共同构建人类命运共同体”以来,世界各国对此热烈回应,并多次写入联合国决议。本届双年展参观国家数量再创历史新高,充分表明“多彩世界与共同命运”的主题同样得到了全世界艺术家的认同和响应。生活在地球上的各个国家和民族面貌多彩多样,生活习惯、宗教信仰、政治伦理各有不同,但却有着一个共同的理想,便是追求和平、进步、富裕、强盛。人们普遍期待一个文明开化、多元发展的世界,这就呼唤全球的多极均衡、多元共存,这便是各国艺术家对“人类命运共同体”理念空前关注和热情参与的原因。 

 

The guests expressed their own opinions and had extensive exchanges and in-depth discussions on the theoretical connection between contemporary art creation and the idea of building a community of shared future for mankind, the research on the history of contemporary art creation at home and abroad, the interpretation of the theme of this biennale, the overall or partial impressions of the works on display and other related issues. They also gave high praise and practical suggestions to the Beijing Biennale. More than 200 representatives of artists, art institutions and media from all over the world attended the symposium.

 

At first, Chief host Shao Dazhen mentioned that since President Xi Jinping put forward the idea of "building a common community of shared future for mankind" in his speech at the UN headquarters New York in 2015, countries around the world have warmly responded to this and have written into UN resolutions many times. The number of participating countries in this biennale has reached a record high, which fully shows that the theme of "A Colorful World and A Shared Future" has won the recognition of artists all over the world. Each country and nation living on the earth has different features, living habits, religions and political ethics, but they share a common ideal, that is, to pursue peace, progress, prosperity and strength. People expect a civilized, diversified world, which calls for multi-polar equilibrium and coexistence. This is why artists from all countries have paid unprecedented attention to the concept of "community of shared future for mankind " and enthusiastically participated in Beijing Biennale.

        随后,陶勤副书记代表活动主办方做主旨发言。她指出,北京双年展将中国的主流美术置于一个国际化界面,传播匹配大国外交的主流国家形象。从首届参展国45个国家发展到本届的113个国家,不仅体现了中国美术的国际号召力,其构建和谐世界的系列学术主题也不断引发国际共鸣。北京双年展以“绘画和雕塑的当代性延伸”为办展宗旨而保持着独立的姿态,为世界范围内架上绘画的回归与复兴提供了“中国支点”,本届主题更是体现出构建人类命运共同体国际背景下,世界绘画和雕塑的艺术担当。她强调,北京双年展将坚持打造百年品牌的思路,继续关注当下、直面即时发生的重大事件,并为装置、影像等新媒体艺术提供展示空间,努力把同中国建交的国家全部纳入参展范畴,向世界持续阐发中国艺术主张。

Later, Deputy Secretary Tao Qin delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the organizers. She pointed out that the Beijing Biennale has put China's mainstream fine arts at an international stage and promoted the national image of major power diplomacy. From 45 participating countries at the beginning to 113 countries this year, such progress not only reflects the international appeal of Chinese fine arts, but also shows that its academic themes concerning building a harmonious world have continuously aroused international resonance. The Beijing Biennale has maintained an independent status with "contemporary extension of painting and sculpture" as its goal, providing "China fulcrum" for the return and revival of world-wide easel painting. The theme of this year's biennale reflects the artistic responsibility of painting and sculpture under the international background of building a community of shared future for mankind. She stressed that the Beijing Biennale, with its ideal of building a century-old brand, will continue to pay attention to current major events and give immediate response, providing exhibition space for new media arts such as installations and images, and striving to bring all countries that have diplomatic relations with China into the space so as to continuously expand China's artistic ideas to the world.  

  

一、人类共同命运关联当代艺术创作 

I. The shared future of mankind connects contemporary art work

        作为北京双年展的发起人之一和资深策委,来自中国艺术研究院的王镛教授对于本届双年展的主题有着独到的理解。他在《全球视野与人类情怀》的发言中指出,本届主题旨在以世界文明多样性的艺术形式构建人类命运共同体的理想境界。东、西方不再纠结于观念对立或传统与现代的两难选择,一切人类创造的艺术形式皆可在创造性地转化为当代世界的艺术形式。本届双年展作品也充分体现了世界多样性文明交流互鉴的精神,既保持着东西方各国不同文明的传统特色,又吸收了其他国家文明的艺术元素,一方面“以我为主、我自为我”,另一方面“我中有你、你中有我”,共同绘制人类命运共同体的宏伟蓝图。

    As one of the organizers of the Beijing Biennale and a senior committee member, Professor Wang Yong from the Chinese National Academy of Arts has a unique understanding of the theme of the Biennale. In his speech "Global Vision and Human Feelings", he pointed out that the theme of this exhibition is to build the ideal realm of a community of shared future for mankind with the artistic form of world civilization diversity. The East and West are no longer facing the conceptual opposition or the dilemma between tradition and modern. All artistic forms created by human beings can be creatively transformed into artistic forms in the contemporary world. The work of this Biennale also embodies the spirit of the exchange and mutual learning of various civilizations in the world. It not only maintains the traditional characteristics of civilizations in the East and West, but also shows the integration of artistic elements from different countries. On the one hand, countries "focus on themselves" but on the other hand, they are "closely connected”, drawing the grand blueprint of the community of shared future for mankind together.

        原法国美协主席雷米•艾戎是北京双年展的常客,对此项展览的长期关注和热忱使他解读本届主题时相较他人更为深入。作为一位艺术家,他从绘画的诗性入手,认为绘画本质便是建立在对色调与和谐的理性认知之上。有限的画幅是属于艺术家们书写情感的自由空间,作品以独具个性的方式表达出每人心中对“合一”的渴望。他还提出一个十分独到的观点,认为世界各大文明之间的差异不仅不是交流的障碍,于人类而言都是宝贵的财富。这种客观存在的文化多样性应借助艺术语言,在每个民族和每个文明的特定文化语境中得到充分表达。

Former President of French Artists Association Rémy Aron is a regular of Beijing Biennale. His long-term attention and enthusiasm for this exhibition have enabled him to interpret the theme more deeply than others. As an artist, he starts creation with the poetic nature of painting and believes that the essence of painting is based on the rational cognition of hue and harmony. The limited size of picture is the free space for artists to write their emotions. The works express people’s desire for "unity" in their heart in a unique way. He also put forward a very special point of view that the differences between the world's major civilizations are not obstacles to communication; instead, they are valuable asset for mankind. This existing cultural diversity should be fully expressed in the specific cultural context of each nation and civilization by means of artistic language.

        瑞士艺术家伯纳德·加罗在阐释主题含义时,似乎充满着一种悲天悯人的情怀。尽管来自风光如画的瑞士,加罗依然严肃地指出,全世界正在趋于恶化的自然生态不断提醒着,人类的命运是有共同体的。在面对地球这一共有家园时,人类应放下文化和种族偏见,同舟共济,共同应对。从这一点上说,当代艺术担纲十分重要的角色,因为它承载着希望,沟通人类的心灵,激励人们从新的角度思考,并做出相应改变,逐步完善自己的良知。加罗自己的作品也正表达了这一深刻命题。

    Swiss artist Bernard Garo seems to be worried while explaining the meaning of the theme. Despite coming from picturesque Switzerland, Bernard Garo still points out seriously that the deteriorating ecological environment of the world constantly reminds us that we human beings have a shared future. In the face of the common homeland of the earth, mankind should put down cultural and racial prejudices and work together to deal with it. From this point of view, contemporary art plays a very important role, because it carries hope, connects hearts, encourages people to think from a new perspective and make changes, gradually improving their conscience. Garo's works also express this profound meaning. 

 

挪威艺术家戴格霍尔

        挪威艺术家戴格霍尔将绘画色彩的意义升华到了“多样性、冲动和内在的精神自由”的高度,自由的思想是艺术创造的基础;同时创造又不仅仅是重新创建、复制和重用,更是推动世界前进的动力,这些也构成了本届双年展主题的核心:未来永不静止、永不停歇、永不中断——这是一场进入色彩、现实与科学未知世界的自由运动。艺术家们应勇于跨越国界,迎接新的挑战与活力,从大众中来,走向国际,方能获得共同成长,走向一个充满希望、和平的世界。

Norwegian artist Dag Hol sublimated the meaning of color to the realm of "diversity, impulse and inner spiritual freedom". Free thought is the foundation of artistic creation. At the same time, creation is not only about re-creation, reproduction and reuse, but also the driving force to push the world forward. These also form the core of the theme of this Biennale: the future will never rest, stop or suspend - this is a free movement to enter the unknown world of color, reality and science. Artists should have the courage to cross national borders, meet new challenges and vitality. Coming from the public and moving towards the international community, they help to achieve common progress and fill world with of hope and peace. 

  

二、多彩世界语境中的当代艺术研究
II. Research on contemporary art in the context of a colorful world
 

北京双年展策划委员张晓凌

        中国国家画院艺术委员会副主任张晓凌也是较早参与北京双年展策划实施的资深策委之一。他在阐述当代中国艺术与人类命运共同体的辩证关系时前置了一个背景命题:从单调阴沉的冷战时代走向多彩世界,从虚幻的乌托邦主义还原至个体生命的丰富性,从优越的人种观念迈向众生平等的境界,从独尊一家的文明形态到各种文明的和谐共生,从独自面对现实的困厄到共同思考人类的未来与命运,已成为当代文明发展的基本趋势与走向。回到展览本身,他鲜明地指出,一方面,中国艺术家们以其作品的独创性,当仁不让地成为全球当代艺术光谱中的亮色;另一方面,他们所表达出的对人类命运的思考与主张,深刻地诠释了“人类命运共同体”这一理念的意涵。

      Zhang Xiaoling, deputy director of the Art Council of China National Academy of Painting, is one of the senior committee members that participated in the planning and implementation of the Beijing Biennale at early time. When he elaborated the dialectical relationship between contemporary Chinese art and the community of shared future for mankind, he put forward a background proposition: from the drab, gloomy cold war era to a colorful world, from illusory utopianism to the richness of individual life, from the concept of  superior race to the realm of equality, from the single-minded civilization form to the harmonious coexistence of various civilizations, from facing the difficulties of reality alone to thinking about the future and destiny of mankind together, all of these have become the basic trend of the development of contemporary civilization. Returning to the biennale, he clearly pointed out that, on the one hand, Chinese artists, with the originality of their works, are undoubtedly the bright colors in the global spectrum of contemporary art; On the other hand, their thoughts and opinions on human destiny have profoundly interpreted the meaning of "a community of shared future for mankind".

        同样作为资深策委,《美术》杂志社社长兼主编尚辉的发言有着学者特有的深邃,并娓娓道来:进入新时代的中国,正在逐步具备观照全球的眼光。这种眼光既让中国美术的当代视野极为开阔,也让中国美术的当代探索力图在全球化与本土性之间探寻一条新的发展道路。而中国美术的当代理念,则始终把艺术的人文精神与社会的积极价值相统一,注重对人民生活的表现、对人民形象的塑造,并始终认为艺术创造的根本来源在于对现实生活的反映。他还特别提到了北京双年展始终秉持绘画、雕塑与新艺术探索共同推进的造型艺术发展理念,为人类艺术发展提供了有效的中国经验。 

    Also as a senior member of committee, Shang Hui, president and editor-in-chief of Art Magazine, delivered a speech which showed his profound insights as a scholar. He explained that China, after entering a new era, is gradually gaining a global perspective. This vision not only broadens the contemporary view of Chinese art, but also enables the contemporary exploration of Chinese art to seek a new development path between globalization and localization. What’s more, in the contemporary concept of Chinese fine arts, the humanistic spirit of art should be in line with the positive value of society, focusing on the expression of people's life and the shaping of people's image. The root of artistic creation lies in the reflection of real life. He also mentioned in particular that the Beijing Biennale always adheres to the concept of plastic arts development, which is jointly promoted by painting, sculpture and exploration of new arts, providing effective Chinese experience for the development of human arts.

        俄罗斯奥伦堡美术学院副教授苏斯皮岑拉对本国现实主义绘画的审美取向有着深厚的研究,对其历史沿革如数家珍:俄罗斯现实主义绘画历经19世纪“巡回展览画派”到20世纪初“艺术世界”的批判现实主义高峰期,也经历了苏联时期的社会现实主义,时至今日依然是俄罗斯绘画的主要形式之一,只是题材从以往富有革命历史感的严肃内容,过渡到轻松乐观的抒情作品。但无论如何变革,俄罗斯现实主义绘画都是时代的产物,反映不同时代人们的精神面貌和社会形态,从而构成了这一风格的精神内核。 

    Suspitsina, associate professor of Orenburg Academy of Fine Arts in Russia, has made a profound research on the aesthetic trend of realistic painting in his country and knows a great deal about its historical evolution: Russian realistic painting has gone through the peak period of critical realism from "The Wanderers (Peredvizhniki)" in the 19th century to the "Art World" in the early 20th century, and has also gone through the social realism in the Soviet Union period. Today, it is still one of the main forms of Russian painting, but the subjects have changed from the serious content with a sense of revolutionary history to relaxing, optimistic lyrical works. However, no matter how it changes, Russian realistic painting is the product of the times, reflecting the spiritual outlook and social forms of people in different times, thus forming the spiritual core of this style.

        广州美术学院教授齐喆对于当前中国版画发展中面临的重新抉择的问题提出了自己的艺术见解。他认为,版画家必须要让自身进入到整个社会文化背景和当代文化情境之中进行思考,研究当代人和周围世界联系的方式,特别是接受视觉信息的方式,寻找自己通过视觉媒介切入生活和精神的角度。他呼吁,让版画家重新回到社会,参与实践,这样背景下产生的版画作品必然会具有更深层的文化意义和社会意义,也会因其来自社会而被大众所关注和接受。 

    Qi Zhe, professor of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, has put forward his own artistic views on the re-selection of Chinese engraving. He believes that the printmaker should think against the whole social and cultural background as well as the contemporary cultural situation, study the way people connect with the surrounding world, especially the way of receiving visual information, and find his own perspective of expressing life and spirit through visual media. He called for the printmakers to return to society and participate in practice, so that the engraving works produced under this background will have deeper cultural and social significance, and will be focused and accepted by the public.

        来自希腊的艺术家斯特拉女士显然对本国悠久而深厚的文化艺术传统充满自豪,她选取了大量古迹遗存,论证了在辉煌的古希腊时期,色彩在包括绘画、雕塑甚至建筑方面都扮演着分量极重的角色,古人对于色彩的巧妙运用达到了令今人钦佩的程度。当然,在大多数当代艺术中,色彩也是其艺术价值的决定性因素。对于艺术的社会功用,她也抱有相似看法:艺术不仅影响我们的情感和审美素质,而且是人与人之间一条非常有效的接触、沟通、合作的渠道。艺术所倡导的文化多元化是全球化时代促进和平与相互理解,推动进步与繁荣的唯一安全框架。 

    Greek artist Ms. Stella is obviously very proud of her country's long-standing and profound cultural and artistic tradition. She has chosen a large number of historical relics to demonstrate that in the glorious ancient Greek period, color played a very important role in painting, sculpture and even architecture. Their predecessors’ skillful use of color has reached a level that people admire today. Of course, in most contemporary art, color is also the decisive factor of its artistic value. She also holds similar views on the social function of art: it not only helps shape our emotions and esthetic sentiment, but also is an effective channel for people to contact, communicate and cooperate with one another. Cultural pluralism advocated by art is the only safe framework to promote peace and mutual understanding, progress and prosperity in the era of globalization.

  

三、多国特展集中展示艺术多样性
III. Special Exhibitions Show the Diversity of Art

        根据惯例,本届双年展设置了多个国家特展,为集中展示本国当代艺术搭建了绝佳的国际化平台。代表新西兰特展发言的艺术家伍德拉夫首先带领听众回到了岛屿初创的洪荒年代,孤悬海外的地理位置造就了新西兰既内敛又开放的双重性格,直至近代以来与欧洲文明的交流互动,新西兰人不断探索,兼收并蓄、博采众长,使毛利土著文化与欧洲技术与民族传统相融合,形成了全新的文化混合体。特展将从自然地理、历史传承、现实生活、文化取向、对外交流等多个层面立体展现今天的新西兰全貌,也正是这些,造就了如今的“长白云之乡”。 

    Based on the previous practices, this biennial has set up a number of special exhibitions, which provided an excellent international platform for the display of national contemporary art. Speaking on behalf of the Special Exhibition of New Zealand, artist Woodruffe first led the audience back to the primeval age of the island. The solitary location shaped New Zealand's dual character of introverted and open. During the exchange and interaction with European civilization in modern times, New Zealanders have continued to explore, assimilate and learn from others, making Maori indigenous culture integrate with European technology and national tradition, forming a brand-new cultural mixture. The special exhibition presents a three-dimensional panorama of New Zealand today from the perspectives of natural geography, historical heritage, real life, cultural orientation and foreign exchange. It is exactly these elements that created today’s "Land of Long White Cloud".

        白俄罗斯特展是本次双年展的一大亮点,在策展人索菲亚的讲述中,听众领略了这个融合了欧洲与俄罗斯双向影响的文化载体。近20多年来,白俄罗斯越来越多地接纳来自西方的当代艺术,参展的十余位年轻一代艺术家们用各自不同的方式解读了本届双年展主题,讲述了人类存在的孤独与生存危机,同样也展现了白俄罗斯画派与后现代主义思潮结合的成果,使观众得以了解白俄罗斯艺术的主题关乎人类理想,彰显出这个国家丰富的艺术含量。 

    The Special Exhibition of Republic of Belarus is a highlight of this Biennale. In the presentation by curator Sofia, the audience knew more about this carrier of culture that integrates the two-way influence of Europe and Russia. Over the past 20 years, Belarus has accepted more and more contemporary art from the West. More than 10 young artists participating in the exhibition have interpreted the theme of this Biennale in their own ways, telling the story of the loneliness and survival crisis of human existence. They showed the results of the combination of Belarusian school and postmodernism, which enables the audience to understand that the theme of Belarusian art is related to human ideals, demonstrating the rich artistic content of the country.

        韩国美协主席李范宪此次率人数众多的代表团访华,体现出对北京双年展的高度关注和同中国美协交流的诚意。研讨会上,他充满感情地说道,中韩两国一衣带水,文化交往源远流长。两国对文化差异基本持包容、接受的态度。当前正是加强艺术文化交流、增进两国友谊的重要时期。在谈到韩国特展时,他特别引介了多位擅于表现民族审美意识、时代精神、造型艺术的韩国当代顶尖艺术家。同时,他也对中国美协明年赴首尔举办的“艺术与和平——中国当代美术作品展”交换展表达了良好期许。

    Lee Bumhun, president of the Korean Fine Arts Association, led a large delegation to visit China, which showed his great concern for Beijing Biennale and his sincerity in communicating with the China Artists Assosiation. At the symposium, he said with emotion that China and South Korea are close neighbors and the cultural exchanges between two countries have a long history. Both countries are tolerant and inclusive to cultural differences. Now it is an important time to strengthen artistic and cultural exchanges and promote friendship between the two countries. When talking about the special exhibition of South Korea, he especially introduced many top contemporary South Korean artists who are good at expressing national aesthetic consciousness, the spirit of the times with plastic arts. Meanwhile, he also expressed good expectations for the "Art and Peace - Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition" exchange exhibition to be held by the China Artists Assosiation in Seoul next year. 

 

“从西班牙到南美洲”特展策展人露西娅

        “从西班牙到南美洲”特展策展人露西娅来自于西班牙美协,两年前,她便与中国美协商讨策划本次特展。针对今天有诸多博览会和双年展过度强调前卫性,使展品解读遇到困难的现状,她的策展思路也非常明确:其一,特展突出多元性,尊重来自各个国家、民族和艺术家的艺术个性和文化特征;其二,作品要能为大众所解读、所接受、所喜爱。秉持这两个思路,她用了两年时间在相关国家遴选适合的艺术家,包括抽象、具象等不同风格,在衡量其艺术水准的同时也注重艺术家所具备的良好的国际声誉,于是便有了此次名为“让艺术更贴近大众”的西班牙特展,以此呈现多元的色彩和造型,表达丰富的思想和强烈的情感,从而吸引公众的兴趣。

    Lucia, the curator of the Special Exhibition of Contemporary Art from the Kingdom of Spain to South America, comes from the Spanish Artists Association. Two years ago, she discussed and planned the special exhibition with the Chinese Art Association. Given that many expositions and biennales today overemphasize avant-garde, which makes it difficult to interpret the exhibits, her goals are very clear: first, highlight diversity and respect the artistic and cultural characteristics of various countries, nationalities and artists; second, the works can be read, accepted and loved by the public. With the two thoughts in mind, she spent two years selecting suitable artists in relevant countries, including both abstract and concrete works. While measuring their artistic standards, she also considered artists' international reputation. Therefore, she had the Spanish special exhibition entitled "Making Art Closer to the Public", which presented diversified colors and shapes, expressed rich thoughts and strong emotions, and thus attracted public interest.

        美国费城艺术大学校长大卫·雅格作为此次美国特展的策展人,开门见山地强调,在当今社会里,创造力也是艺术最重要、最关键的一部分,它是艺术家和设计师的灵魂。随着数字技术的发展,世界联系日益紧密,对于有创造力的人来说,新机会正如雨后春笋般不断涌现。这也正是费城艺术大学的使命,即提高全人类创造力。他介绍到,美国特展展示了本校教师和校友的作品,展现学校追求创造性的宗旨,力求使观众从中感受到教师们带给学生的充满创造性的教育文化。他最后用一句话共勉:创造性的时代即为现在,我们都可以成为创造人类共同命运的变革者。

    David Yager, president of University of the Arts as well as the curator of this special exhibition of the United States, came straight to the point that creativity remains the most important and essential part of art in today's society. It is the soul of artists and designers. With the development of digital technology, the world is increasingly connected. For creative people, new opportunities are springing up like mushrooms. This is also the mission of University of the Arts, which is to improve the creativity of all mankind. He introduced that the special exhibition of the United States displayed the works of teachers and alumni, showing the school's aim of pursuing creativity, and trying to make the audience feel the creative educational culture brought to students by teachers. In the end, he shared a word: in the era of creativity, we can all able to be reformers to build a community of shared future for mankind.

Liao Qin, associate professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts

 

        中央美术学院副教授廖勤应邀为本届双年展创作的主题绘画《同舟共济,荣辱与共》陈列在美术馆圆厅正中。领受这一任务后,廖勤副教授在构思、创作可谓费尽心力。他围绕“人类命运共同体”主题,精细筛选、刻画维护和平、规划城市、欢庆节日、环保生态、爱护动物、救援危难以及中国援建、高铁速度、神舟蛟龙、开采可燃冰等为数可观的当代社会内容。廖勤认为,现实生活能够滋养艺术家笔墨、陶冶个人性情、激发创作激情;坚持以人民为中心的创作导向,立足于当代人文环境中,有着取之不竭的灵感源泉,将吸引更多人喜爱中国画、关注中国美术,这是中国画艺术家的职责与担当。

    Liao Qin, associate professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, was invited to create the theme painting "Sharing Weal and Woe in the Same Boat" for this biennale, which is displayed at the center of the circle hall of the Art Museum. After receiving this task, professor Liao Qin made great efforts in art design and creation. Based on the theme of "A Community of Shared Future for Mankind", he carefully selected and depicted a great  number of materials concerning contemporary society, such as peace maintenance, city planning, festival celebrating, environmental protection, animal caring, rescuing crises as well as China's aid projects, high-speed railway, Shenzhou Jiaolong, combustible ice, etc. Liao Qin believes that real life can refine artists' work of art, cultivate their character and stimulate their creative passion; art creation should be people-centered based on contemporary humanistic environment so that artists have an inexhaustible source of inspiration and are able to attract more people to love Chinese painting and pay attention to Chinese art. This is the duty and responsibility of Chinese painting artists.

        中国美术馆副研究馆员任哲是到场嘉宾里面青年一代的代表,入选北京双年展除了感到荣誉和鼓励外,更多的是责任。他谈到,“构建人类命运共同体”倡议已成为连通各国人民梦想的桥梁,而经典、优秀的美术作品通过对外传播,让世界正确、深刻地认识一个蓬勃发展的中国,从而增进情感、文化认同和命运共建,则是新时代青年文艺工作者义不容辞的职业使命。他决心,在这一发展理念指引下,以眼记录,用心感受,坚定文化自信、继承优秀传统、弘扬当代精神,坚持以人民为中心的创作导向,创作出更多无愧于时代的优秀作品。

    Ren Zhe, an associate research fellow of the National Art Museum of China, is a representative of the younger generation among the guests present. Besides being honored and encouraged, he felt that being selected for the Beijing Biennale is more of a responsibility. He said that the initiative of "Building a Community of Shared Future for Mankind" has become a bridge connecting the dreams of people in all countries. It is the duty-bound mission for young literary and art workers in the new era to make the world have a sound and profound understanding of a booming China through the promotion of classic and excellent works of fine arts, so as to enhance their emotional, cultural identity and the building of a shared future.         同许多欧美艺术家一样,来自英国的菲奥娜很早以前就被中国水墨画吸引,时常会花上几小时去欣赏、研究。她认为,水墨画能够捕捉到自然和生命的鲜活。画家在宣纸上作画的姿态似乎也体现了大自然的无限创造力,从而对她本人的绘画产生了重要影响,她开始借鉴水墨画的一些技法,比如尽力保持笔触的纯粹。在她的作品中,色彩占据了首要位置,她坚信丰富的色彩表达着韵律和动感,预示着幸福与美好;她同样坚信人类同呼吸、共命运,彼此需要,而艺术正是能够凝聚人心、传递快乐。

    Like many European and American artists, British artist Fiona was attracted by Chinese ink painting long time ago and often spent hours appreciating and studying it. She believes that ink painting can capture the freshness of nature and life. The artist's gesture while painting on Chinese art paper also seems to reflect the infinite creativity of nature, which has had an important impact on her own painting. Since then, she began to learn some techniques of ink painting, such as trying to keep the simplicity of brush strokes. In her works, color is the essential element. She firmly believes that rich colors express rhythm and movement, and indicate happiness and beauty. She also believes that human beings share the same future and need each other, while art can unite people and convey happiness.

        厄瓜多尔著名雕塑家杰斯·科博在发言中抒发了对城市拥挤的噪音污染的厌倦,最终离开城市,搬到乡间感受自然。那段时间,他再次被自然的美所震撼,并且意识到现在的一些“教育”让人们失去了基本的审美能力。因此,他开始重新思考艺术的意义,不再认为它是获得名利的一种手段,而是为了获得内心的平静和对事物的简单感受。他给自己创作的公鸡取名“凌晨4点”,因为听到公鸡打鸣就意味着迎来了崭新的一天。此外,他还认为北京双年展除了展示艺术本体,还尤为尊重不同人群对彼此文化、艺术和政治观念的不同看法,实现了“尊重他人的权利会带来和平”。

      Ecuador's famous sculptor Jesús Cobo said he was tired of the crowd, noise and pollution in the city. Finally, he left the city and moved to the countryside to get closer to nature. During that time, he was once again shocked by the beauty of nature. He realized that, to some extent, today’s "education" has deprived people of their basic aesthetic ability. Therefore, he began to reconsider the meaning of art, no longer considering it as a means to gain fame and wealth, but inner peace and simple feelings about things. He named his cock "4 A.M." because hearing the cock crow means a brand new day starts. In addition, he also believes that the Beijing Biennale not only displays the essence of art, but also respects the different groups’ cultural, artistic and political concepts, realizing the ideal that "respecting the rights of others brings peace."

        澳大利亚华裔艺术家沈嘉蔚已多次入选北京双年展,他每次带来的作品总会给人以惊喜。这次,他给听众讲述了一个阿富汗难民家庭的故事,故事的女主人公叫雅尔达,在幼时为躲避阿富汗战争,全家辗转漂泊,最后来到澳大利亚定居。雅尔达从小立志从事记者职业,成绩优异,学生时代就成为当地电视台的一名记者。毕业后,她被派往阿富汗进行战地采访,冒着生命危险制播的纪录片震动世界。如今她已成为英国BBC世界新闻节目主持人,还获得了联合国媒体和平奖,跻身国际著名主持人行列。作品描绘了一家三口温馨和睦的肖像,展现了一个穆斯林家庭已完美地融入国际大家庭,暗含了人类所达到的理想未来,寄托了美好的祝愿。

    Chinese Australian artist Shen Jiawei’s works have been selected in Beijing Biennale for many times. His works never fail to surprise us. This time, he told the audience the story of an Afghan refugee family. The heroine is called Yalda. When she was young, in order to avoid the Afghan war, her family drifted from place to place and finally settled in Australia. Yalda dreamed to be a journalist from an early age and achieved excellent results. As a student, she was a reporter for local TV stations. After graduation, she was sent to Afghanistan for field interviews, and risked her life to produce documentaries that shocked the world. Now she is the host of BBC World News, and has won the UN Media Peace Prize, becoming one of the world's most famous hosts. The work depicts a warm, harmonious family of three, showing that Muslims have been perfectly integrated into the international family, which implies the ideal future of mankind and expresses his good wishes.

        保加利亚艺术家格奥尔基耶娃毕业于维也纳艺术大学,学院派出身的她对于艺术创作有着冷静和反思的学者气质。在她的作品中,以人际关系为线索,描绘了生活中形形色色的不同人群,并选择红色作为主色系。甚至人物各自的物理属性都被省略了,只有具体的细节特征才会被描绘出来。在她看来,这象征着人与人之间的亲近和疏离,而这些独一无二但不知名的人反而会给自己带来了一种莫名的安全感,因为自己在他们面前仍然是独立、却又孤独的。 

 

Bulgarian artist Olga Georgieva graduated from University of Arts, Vienna. Her artistic creation therefore shows her calm and reflection. In her works, she uses interpersonal relationships to depict various communities in life with red as the main color. She focuses on specific details and even the physical attributes of the characters are omitted. In her view, this symbolizes the closeness as well as alienation between people. These unique yet unknown people somehow bring her a sense of security, because she is independent yet lonely in front of them.

        以色列艺术家丹妮埃拉·沙因曼似乎对人工智能颇有研究,他开篇名义地指出人的大脑是科学研究中的重要课题,尚有诸多秘密有待揭示。在此背景下,AI(人工智能)应运而生,是科技进步的标志性产物。他发出了很多人曾提出的设问:AI能否最终取代人脑?网络智力能否像人脑一样产生情感、精神、价值观?基于这些思考,他描绘了一个庞大而复杂的迷宫,象征着人脑神经网络的分支。神秘莫测的人脑创造了人的身体和思想情感,也创造了奇幻的艺术。最终他相信,人脑的功能是无可取代的。AI擅长理性分析、计算,而人脑则继续创造情感维度。他坚信未来的世界依然属于人类。 

    Israeli artist Daniella Sheinman seems to have done a lot of research on artificial intelligence (AI). He begun by pointing out that the human brain is an important topic in scientific research, and there are still many secrets to be revealed. Against this background, AI came into being and became a landmark of scientific and technological progress. He asked many people: Can AI eventually replace the human brain? Can Internet Intelligence produce emotion, spirit and values as human brain? Based on these thoughts, he depicted a huge, complicated maze, symbolizing the branches of the human brain neural network. The mysterious human brain created the body, thoughts, feelings as well as fantastic art of human beings. Therefore, he believes that the function of human brain is irreplaceable. AI is good at rational analysis and calculation, while the human brain will continue to create emotions. He firmly believes that the future of the world still belongs to mankind.

 

印度艺术家古普塔 

India artist Shatrudhan K. Gupta

 

        来自印度的古普塔与中国的渊源可谓由来已久,多年前,他的作品首次入选北京双年展,有机会首次拜访中国,也彻底爱上了中国。随后,他申请到了中国美术学院高级学者研究项目提供的奖学金,开始努力学习中文,并得以在中国深造。毕业后,他又自费继续在中国美院进修,通过多年学习交流,他的作品风格逐渐发生转变,从印度的色彩世界进入了中国的水墨世界,又尝试利用这种碎片化的宇宙拼凑一个宇宙精神的实体,这个是带有印度传统艺术的特色、中印合璧的作品。最终,他也在杭州成功举办了个人展览。

    Indian artist Shatrudhan K. Gupta has a long history with China. Many years ago, his works were selected for the first time in Beijing Biennale. He therefore had the opportunity to pay his first visit to China and fell in love with China since then. Later, he applied for a scholarship provided by the Senior Scholar Research Program of the China Academy of Fine Arts and began to study Chinese and seek further studies in China. After graduation, he continued to study in China Academy of Fine Arts at his own expense. Through years of study and exchange, his style of works gradually changed from India's color world to China's ink painting world. He also tried to use this fragmented universe to piece together an entity of cosmic spirit. This work is not only a combination of Chinese and Indian art, but also features the characteristics of traditional Indian art. He also successfully held a personal exhibition in Hangzhou.

        此外,上合组织特展也同期在中国美术馆中展出,俄罗斯艺术学院院士、列宾美院教授、有着“人民艺术家”称号的安德烈代表特展发言。他对中国政府、中国艺术体制和中国美术发展表达了高度赞赏。他提到,中华文明是世界上最古老的文明之一,对许多周边民族的文化发展影响深远,中国的文化艺术也深刻地影响了俄罗斯的历史进程。中俄两国始终致力于发展和巩固睦邻友好关系,一直携手并肩,互相学习,守望相助。在世界文化之林中,中国推动的各种对话在丰富各国文化的同时,也在充实自身的文化血脉,成为国际艺术界的佼佼者。他以友谊与艺术之名,向新中国成立70周年表示衷心祝贺。

In addition, the Special Exhibition of SCO was also displayed in the National Art Museum of China. Andrew, who is an academician of the Russian Academy of Art, a professor of the Repin Academy of Fine Arts and is honored as "People's Artist", spoke on behalf of the Special Exhibition of SCO. He mentioned that Chinese civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has a profound influence on the cultural development of many neighboring nations. Chinese culture and art have also profoundly influenced the historical process of Russia. Both countries have always been committed to the development and consolidation of good-neighbor relationship. They have been working hand in hand, learning from and helping each other. In the forest of world cultures, the dialogues promoted by China enrich the cultures of both other countries and that of its own, becoming a leader in international art circles. In the name of friendship and art, he expressed heartfelt congratulations to the 70th anniversary of the founding of new China.

        王镛教授在评价厄瓜多尔雕塑家的作品时,提及很多现代主义作品从自然动植物当中汲取创作题材,用单纯简约的艺术语言很好地诠释回归自然、道法自然,回归人的淳朴本性,克服人性异化,与本届双年展人类共同命运主题异曲同工;包林教授则评价道,把命运的美好想象和向往,以及我们当下的生存体验,乃至于我们向世界各国学习所吸收的各种绘画语言有机相融合,这就是一个典型的中国经验;尚辉主编在回应主题性创作时也评价道,中国传统古语中有“同舟共济”的概念,在《圣经》中也有诺亚方舟,无论来自东方还是西方,有关用舟来共渡一个劫难都是通用的象征,因此用舟来象征人类度过灾难的意向便是主体绘画的应有之义;邹文教授在评价俄罗斯现实主义绘画时,也引申到中国的传统文化,提出传承就是一种坚持,只有在这种坚持中才能形成一个国家、一个民族的文脉,形成艺术的特质,构成人类文明多样化之中的一个色彩。 

 

Speaking of the works of Ecuadorian sculptors, Professor Wang Yong mentioned that many modernist works draw creation themes from plants and animals, and use simple, plain artistic language to interpret the theme of returning to nature and imitating nature. They showed the intrinsic nature of human beings, and overcame the alienation of human nature, which is the same as the theme of this Biennale. Professor Bao Lin commented that it is a typical Chinese experience to combine the good imagination and pursuit of future with our current living experience and even the painting languages that we have learned from other countries in the world. In response to the thematic creation, editor-in-chief Shang Hui also said that there is a concept of "helping each other in the same boat" in Chinese idioms and Noah's Ark in the Bible. Whether in the east or west, the boat is regarded as a universal symbol for people to go through the difficulties together. Therefore, using boat to symbolize the intention of human beings to survive disasters is the proper meaning of theme painting. While evaluating Russian realistic painting, Professor Zou Wen extended to Chinese traditional culture and proposed that inheritance is a kind of persistence. Only in this persistence can a country or a nation be formed, the artistic characteristics be shaped, becoming an irreplaceable part in the diversity of human civilization. 

        在自由讨论阶段,在座听众纷纷登台发言,所涉话题也更为广泛,马来西亚、印度、纳米比亚、苏里南的艺术家表达了一个共同的感受:我们一定要意识到,以及包容彼此文化的不同与多样性,只有认同了这种“不同”,尊重不同的特点和不同的表达方式,我们才能够命运共担、风雨同舟,才能够创造出多彩的世界,可以使我们共同迈向共同命运的大舞台;英国艺术家则侧重于美育,提出不仅对青少年儿童,对成人的美育也应采取“终身教育”,培养对艺术的信心,塑造健全的人格;一位厄瓜多尔的艺术家提议,参加下一届双年展的全世界艺术家可以共同创作一件纪念作品,为北京双年展留下一个永恒的回忆。 

During the free discussion part, the audience took the stage one after another to speak on a broader topic. Artists from Malaysia, India, Namibia and Suriname expressed a common feeling: We must realize and accommodate the differences and diversity of each other's cultures. Only by recognizing this "difference" and respecting different characteristics and different ways of expression can we share weal and woe, create a colorful world, and make us move towards a big stage of a shared future. British artists focus on aesthetic education, proposing that "lifelong education" should be adopted not only for teenagers and children, but also for adults to cultivate confidence in art and shape a sound personality. An Ecuadorian artist proposed that artists from all over the world participating in the next biennale can jointly create a commemorative work, leaving an eternal memory for the Beijing Biennale. 

        中国画家也表示,这几天同各国美术家的交流与积累对固有的艺术观念冲击很大,今后要将新的艺术思维融入创作中;一位安徽的画家说,自己唯一能做的就是尽最大努力创作出更好的作品来捐赠给北京双年展,祝愿我们自己的双年展越办越好。 

 

Chinese painters also said that the exchange and accumulation with artists from various countries in the past few days have had a great impact on the inherent concept of art, and new artistic thinking should be integrated into the creation in the future. A painter fromm Anhui Province said that the only thing he can do is to do his best to create better works and donate them to the Beijing Biennale, wishing our own biennale a better run. 

        本次研讨会学术主题不仅是对“构建人类命运共同体”倡议的响应和践行,同时也为国际艺术家们提供了广阔而又颇具针对性和现实意义的交流平台。在“人类命运共同体”这一宏大叙事语境中,中外美术家们借助语言相互沟通,探寻东西方文明交融的脉络,拓展了双年展的学术视野。在新的历史起点上,北京双年展将不忘初心,继续坚守以绘画和雕塑为主的办展宗旨和特色,积极鼓励艺术家在形式语言方面的拓展和创新,不断实践绘画和雕塑在当下构建人类命运共同体这一使命中的历史担当。

The academic theme of this seminar is not only the response and practice to the initiative of "building a community of shared future for mankind", but also provides a broad, yet practical platform for international artists to communicate. In the grand narrative context of "a community of shared future for mankind", Chinese and foreign artists communicate with each other with language to explore the development of eastern and western civilizations and expand the academic vision of the biennale. At a new historical starting point, the Beijing Biennale will stay true to its mission. It will stick to its mian purpose and characteristics featuring painting and sculpture, encourage artists to expand and innovate in formal language, and continuously practice the historical role of painting and sculpture in the current mission of building a community of shared future for mankind.
